Tests and Procedures

 

Pulmonary function testing
A set of breathing tests performed in the pulmonary function laboratory to measure a person's lung function and helps to diagnose lung disease such as asthma, COPD/emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis, etc.

 

Cardiopulmonary exercise testing
A treadmill or bike test is performed in addition to the pulmonary function test to help determine heart and lung functions. This is also performed in the pulmonary function laboratory.

 

Bronchoscopy
A flexible scope is passed into the lungs via the mouth or nose to inspect the airways and/or to obtain samples.
 
    Bronchoscopy with endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS)
Ultrasound-guided bronchoscopy to improve the chance of obtaining adequate sample when biopsy is performed.
 
    Navigational bronchoscopy
CT-guided bronchoscopy for accurate biopsy of peripheral lung lesions.

 

Sleep study
Test performed either in the sleep laboratory or at home to record sleep and help diagnose sleep disorders such as sleep apnea.

 

Thoracentesis

Drainage of pleural effusion, or fluid around the lungs, with a thin catheter.
